One of the more difficult shoots I’ve ever done, and weirdly one of the first, was of a band playing a small concert at a local watering hole…outside…at night.
I had no idea how difficult this kind of shooting could be till I shot the McKinley-Beggs band that night at Horse Creek Winery. Bands are active. They’re constantly moving around. Shooting in the dark and trying to capture action is difficult to do without a flash. Why no flash? Because it screws up the ambience in something like this…and frankly because I was too new at it to know any better or to use a flash in a way that was unobtrusive.
I thought sure that every shot would turn out badly…but it didn’t, and the guys in the band loved the shoot…and used the shots on their website and Facebook page.
